Torco is the name associated with premium racing oils and advanced lubricants. The founder, Bob Lancaster, invented the first blown nitro oils and 20W-50 racing motor oils. And he had been making free-flowing SAE 50 motor oil since 1948 – a long time before the Society of Automotive Engineers identified this grade of viscosity as SAE 20W-50. Bob Lancaster started a company of his own in 1950 to create racing oils under the Torco brand.

In the 1950s, Torco oil was popular because it could provide exactly what racers needed: better lubrication, sealing, cooling, less varnish, sludge, and deposits, much greater wear protection and, as a result, a considerable boost in horsepower output due to reduced friction. Known during that time as Torco V-Bloc 50 because SAE 20W-50 was not a recognized motor oil viscosity grade yet, this oil looked much thinner than other SAE 50 oils on the market because of its see-through, pale yellow color. Although, it was a higher viscosity lubricant than the majority of other SAE 50 oils and was much more similar to an SAE 60.
