The car customizers of yore sought to give cars a smoother, sleeker, more integrated appearance, devoid of components that stuck out and detracted from the design. On the cars of the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s, the common subjects of early customizers, the parts that stuck out the most were the massive chrome steel bumpers that were typical of the era. These bumpers were regularly replaced with custom made “roll pans”. While the bumpers on modern cars have been integrated into the body, the rear bumpers on trucks still protrude. You can get the smooth look for your rig with one of our custom roll pans.
Pickup trucks were originally utilitarian vehicles and the bed was the most valuable feature, but today hauling people is often more important than hauling cargo, and the well-appointed crew cabs on many of today’s trucks get more use than the bed. Nevertheless, modern pickups are prized for their versatility – the ability to carry the whole family one day and a load of mulch the next – and a step bumper remains a necessary feature. But if head-turning style is more important to you than functionality, substituting one of our custom roll pans for the bumper can boost your truck’s curb appeal.
Back in the day, once the bumpers were removed from a car there were gaping openings at the lower part of the body that had to be filled. Roll pans weren’t off the shelf parts so car customizers had to form their own out of metal for each car. The roll pans followed the contours of the lower body, curving at the bottom, and were usually leaded in place for a seamless look. If you’re customizing a late model truck, when you remove the rear bumper you have a similar dilemma, but unlike those customizers you won’t have to fabricate your own roll pan, just make a choice from our huge selection.
Modern vehicle makers have done a great job integrating the front bumper into the body on newer trucks, but the rear bumper sticks out by necessity. Most buyers want a substantial rear bumper with a platform they can stand on to access the bed, and to help protect the rear of the vehicle in a collision. If you want a smoother, cleaner look for the back of your truck, the bumper has to go, and you may want to cover up that trailer hitch, too. Just like the old days, a roll pan is the prescription for a smooth look, but unlike yesterday’s customizers you won’t have to engage in hours of metal work to get it.
We offer custom made roll pans for most late model pickups and some SUVs. They’re constructed from sturdy materials including fiberglass, urethane, FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic), stainless steel, and carbon fiber. Each roll pan is specifically created for the application, so you can be assured of styling that perfectly complements your truck. Although in some cases minor sanding and shaving may be required for fitment, our roll pans are essentially bolt-on components. Once you’re satisfied with fitment, you can have it painted to match the color of your truck for a clean, factory like installation.
Although they’ll definitely give your truck a sleeker, custom look, most of our roll pans are also practical and feature a license plate cut out. If you still need a trailer hitch for towing, many owners conceal it behind the license plate. Some roll pans also have openings for exhaust pipes. Another popular custom mod is the installation of tail lights in the roll pan. Some of our roll pans have molded-in recesses that are ready for tail light installation. With roll pan mounted tail lights, you can remove the OE lights from the body and fill in the openings, for a unique, show-winning appearance.
