The early story of the Mercury brand was tied to Lincoln's (the Monterey, the Montclair), but in 1957 Mercury acquired a life of its own. Dominated initially by the Park Lane convertible model in body design, it promoted sportiness with the Super Marauder option (a V8 engine providing 400 hp) and praised aerodynamics. Later on, the Cougar pony car and the Marquis hardtop appeared. The 1970s, however, saw revisions: the Mercury Montego and the Cougar growing in size, general emphasis on comfort, and 5 mph bumpers all around. The Grand Marquis and the Monarch started there. The 80's downsizing was compensated by more interior space and fuel economy (the compact Lynx model), whereas the 90's renewal led to the domination of the Grand Marquis.
