The Maserati 228I, which was also known as the Tipo AM334, was a five-seater, two-door, grand touring-class coupe constructed on the Biturbo chassis. The automobile had the largest 2.8L, 18-valve V6 with fuel injection. The name of the model has a secret meaning: 2 doors and 2.8L engine make together the 228. Bilstein gas-charged shock absorbers were used as replacements for the usual hydraulics and a four-speed automatic transmission was offered as an option. A 24-valve but nonetheless carbureted model was revealed in December 1984; the production 228I was first introduced during the Turin Motor Show in 1986 and 469 examples were manufactured until 1992.
