Planning to carry some heavy loads on your Ford Explorer? A trailer hitch will make this easy for you. There are plenty of Ford Explorer trailer hitches available at CARiD. If you have never towed a trailer, then there are a few things to keep in mind. When loading the trailer it is not recommended to just throw everything in a heap and then pull it. The weight needs to be evenly distributed throughout the entire trailer with the heavier items at the front. While doing this though, remember the tongue would need to have only 10-15 percent of the entire trailer weight on it. Make sure to secure any load no matter how big or small. This can be done with some tie downs. When the trailer hitch is properly installed but the trailer weight is off, then there is the risk of trailer swaying precariously. This means the trailer will be going from side to side which makes it almost impossible for you to control the vehicle.
Instead of pushing on the gas like normal and straining your Ford Explorer trailer hitch, you want to pull away slowly and gradually increase the speed. If the trailer starts swaying, stop immediately and rearrange the load. An important factor to remember is: when pulling a load, the length of your vehicle is now longer. There is also added weight so when going up the hill or even getting ready to overtake someone on the highway; it is going to take a little longer to hit the desired speed. You never want to slam on the brakes in hopes of stopping. It will take longer to come to a complete stop so allow some extra time. More room is also going to be required while taking a turn or the trailer will end up hitting items on the way. So swing wider on your turns to allow enough room.
