An automatic transmission governor is a device designed to regulate hydraulic fluid pressure based upon the automobile’s speed. It attains this by utilizing centrifugal force, which spins a set of balanced hinged weights countered by pull-back springs. Whenever the weights pull away against the springs under higher RPMs, more oil flow is allowed through the governor itself so as to force upon the shift valves that are located in the valve body , which, in its own turn, signals the necessary gear shifts. Engine vacuum begins to react at a very accurate rate, proportional to the engine load, with the vacuum decreasing whenever the engine load begins to increase. The modulator is connected to the transmission case externally and features a shaft, which is attached to the throttle valve within the valve body. When the engine is not under load or merely under a light load, high vacuum begins to act on the modulator, which then moves the throttle valve in one direction, so as to shift early and soft. And when the engine load begins to increase, vacuum begins to diminish, which moves the valve itself in the opposite direction, thus making the tranny of your Dodge Challenger shift later and more firmly.
