Brief Tops

Besides the legendary all-terrain capability, part of the appeal of owning a vehicle like a Jeep is the soft top. The ability to lower the top or take it completely off and enjoy the sun and open air freedom is irresistible. But ask anyone who’s been fried to a crisp after a day under the blazing sun in a convertible and they’ll tell you there can be too much of a good thing. Not to mention you can be soaked very quickly in a sudden summer downpour.

Unlike the drivers of ordinary convertibles who have no alternative but to put the regular soft top up to get out of the sun or rain, if you own a Jeep CJ, Wrangler or similar vehicle you can have protection from the sun and sudden showers without giving up the cool breezes and open air feel. Our brief tops cover just the top of the vehicle, leaving the sides and back open. You get all the benefits of open air motoring without sun burn or wet clothes.

Brief tops, also called summer tops, have many names. They’re most commonly called bikini tops but many manufacturers have their own identifiers including safari, island topper, sun caps, and more. There are traditional, also called targa tops that just cover the front seat area, as well as full or extended tops that provide coverage to the rear of the vehicle. While most brief tops attach to the roll bar, traditional style tops attach with straps to the rear of the body. There are also sun shades that can conveniently remain installed even when the soft top or hard top are on the vehicle.

There may be times when you want more protection than a brief top alone, but that doesn’t mean you have to reinstall your standard soft top. On chilly mornings, windy days, or extended highway travel, you’ll want a more enclosed cabin to stay warmer and not be windblown and haggard when you reach your destination. Installing the doors helps but that still leaves the rear of the cabin open. Adding a cab curtain, also called a windbreaker, will enclose the cabin, making it quieter and allowing more effective heater or A/C operation, and installing a deck cover will enclose and protect the cargo area.
