BMW 3-Series Clutch Flywheels

In a physical sense, the flywheel is the accumulator of mechanical energy that limits rotational speed change by its great moment of inertia. In your BMW 3-Series, the flywheel is mounted just in front of the clutch disc. Mounted on the engine crankshaft, the clutch flywheel is meant to resist instant rpm drop when the clutch is disengaged and also smoothen power impulses produced by the engine at certain operating modes. Another function of the flywheel is to arrange the engine start thanks to its toothed rim. This rim is engaged with the starter's pinion to crank the engine when you push the start button or turn the key.

Since the flywheel stores a substantial amount of energy while rotating at high speed, it has to be perfectly balanced and free from any damages compromising its strength.
